A Healthy, Caring Community in Christ, Reaching Out With The Gospel to Those Around Us

Katrina Outreach

Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the Gulf coast left many LCMS churches and families with uninhabitable buildings and the loss of virtually all of their possessions. Galilee wanted to help in some way so we set aside $5000.00 from our reserve funds then approached the Southeastern District for guidance.  The SED advised that individual families were most in need of assistance, other than food and clothing, which were in abundant supply from the tremendous response to this disaster. They supplied us with the name and contact information of a family that needed help.

MEET THE MORCOS

Sol and Nicholas

Sol, originally from Honduras, and Nicholas, originally from Greece, met and wed in New Orleans and started a family. They each worked two jobs in their attempt to achieve the "American Dream". Then, about 2 years ago, Nicholas had to have brain surgery and is now disabled. They have two sons, Ages 6 and 10. Foremost on their minds was the disruption caused to the boys' education. The boys were attending a Lutheran Christian school and the ruin of their house and loss of virtually all of their possessions made it impossible to afford the tuition for their sons.

Galilee, with the help of some matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, will be paying the tuition and fees for the boys for this school year. Also, with a forthcoming fundraiser, and more matching funds from Thrivent, we hope to take care of next year’s tuition, too. We also sent many Christmas presents for the boys and more cash for immediate necessities for the family. The total amount donated will be about $14,000.

The Morcos family has expressed great appreciation for what we have done, and have communicated on a regular basis. Following are some photos of the results of the hurricane and some notes from the Morcos family
